The Atlantic County Historical Museum is operated by the Atlantic County Historical Society, founded in 1913. The Society was initially formed by six women who shared an interest in collecting and preserving Atlantic County and Southern New Jersey culture. Originally the AC Historical Museum was situated in the locally-treasured Somers Mansion from the 1940s until 1970, when the current building, also located on Shore Road, was completed. The museum currently boasts a collection of more than 20,000 items, ranging from a continental dollar, to 17th-century documents, to an 1870s bed. A number of artifacts shed light on Atlantic County's intriguing maritime heritage, including weaponry and aboriginal artifacts. Shipbuilding was one of the major 19th-century industries in Atlantic County. An impressive fine arts collection, in addition to textile items and historic clothing, is also on hand for visitors. All items in the collection were donated by Society members or friends and can be traced by name, place and date to the persons who made, used or owned them. Though each decade of the early 20th century is represented in the collection, it bears a strong emphasis on the Victorian era. Individual and group tours are available. Volunteer guides are on duty to assist you. Admission is free.
